The Prince of Egypt (1998)

DreamWorks’ dynamic side of the fishing of Moses sticks to the Bible and eschews the Disney convention of having a cute comic sidekick on board. The film is visually lavish, but scenes corresponding to the chariot race, or even the valediction of the Red Sea, look no more impressive than the David Lean-word choice remedy in Disney’s Mulan. Nor is it a comforting film over the extent of the very pubescent - the ‘death of the opening born’ harry is especially horrifying, albeit stunningly realised - and kids may even find God’s press into service of fierceness to overthrow the Egyptians excessive. But as epic, emotionally satisfying spectacle, it’s through up there with the very best in mainstream zest. It’s a tenderness that some of the more wondrous moments are spoiled by mundane songs.
